H_46 x B_38 cm Jean-Baptiste Greuze ist einer der berühmtesten Maler der französischen Aufklärung. Er trug zur Erneuerung der Genremalerei bei, indem er anekdotische Momente des Alltags in Szene setzte und ein sentimentales Bild des Familienlebens vermittelte. Seine Werke, die durch Stiche weit verbreitet wurden, wurden von zahlreichen Künstlern kopiert und neu interpretiert. Unser Gemälde trägt auf der Rückseite des Rahmens einen Vermerk zu Christina Augusta von Fersen, Gräfin Löwenhielm, die aus einer bedeutenden schwedischen Adelsfamilie stammte. Sie ist die Cousine von Axel von Fersen, dem Günstling von Marie-Antoinette.
