Philipp Clüver, Daciarum Moesiarum et Thraciae, engraved map of the Balkans and Danube Engraved map on paper, at the lower left the title cartouche in a strapwork frame lettered „DACIARUM MOESIARUM et THRACIÆ Vetus et Nova Descriptio“, no text verso, with a centre fold. The map covers the Danube and Balkan region with the ancient territories of Dardania, Moesia and Thracia; ranges of mountains are rendered in molehill manner, watercourses as fine double lines. Along the edge of the map the graduation. From Philipp Clüver's „Introductio in universam geographiam“. Age-appropriate condition, foxed, at the top a backed loss in the margin. Image 20.5 x 24.5 cm (HxW), overall size 22 x 30.5 cm (HxW) Philipp Clüver (1580 Danzig – 1622 Leiden) is regarded as the founder of historical geography. His „Introductio in universam geographiam, tam veterem quam novam“ appeared posthumously in Leiden in 1624 and became the first comprehensive modern textbook of the subject; the work was reissued again and again by changing publishers well into the 18th c., with differing sets of maps. Clüver's concern was to reconcile the transmitted geography of antiquity with the actual state of the terrain.
