Square spirit bottle of clear glass with cut decor, leaf scrolls, cartouche and lattice work Clear glass with cut decor, glass bottle, flat rectangular body with rounded edges, rounded shoulder, short neck with flat flared mouth disc, matt-cut leaf scrolls and palmette-like leaf motifs, cartouche of volutes, lattice work, ground-out pontil underneath, cork stopper, stopper later, good condition commensurate with age, foot with scratches, H. 16 cm. Square bottles have been known since the second half of the 16th century and reached their greatest distribution throughout Central Europe in the 17th century. As the most common form of transport bottle, the square bottle held spirits as a brandy or schnapps bottle in household and pharmacy and could be stored in wooden cases to save space. Their large flat wall surfaces were popular for painting from an early date and offered space for decoration. The pontil mark is the point on the base where the pontil rod was knocked off during the making of hollow glass.
