The most common conifer on the Balearic island is the Aleppo pine, which forms open pine woods near the coast and climbs to altitudes of about 1000 metres. The German term Macchie, Italian macchia and French maquis, denotes the evergreen shrub formation of the Mediterranean region of holm oak, pistachio and rockrose, which grows three to five metres high. The Costa del Sol stretches for some 150 kilometres along the Andalusian coast of the province of Málaga and is flanked inland by mountain ranges such as the Sierra de Mijas and the Sierra Blanca. The draughtsman Martin Wirth lived in Darlingerode (today part of Ilsenburg) in the Harz.
