Bridge in winter, snow-covered bridge with railing, building with pointed spire, 20th century Oil/canvas on hardboard, unsigned, 20th century, winter view, in front a snow-covered bridge with railing, on the right the dark grey arched struts of the bridge, behind it a grey-green building with a tall, pointed, snow-covered spire, on the left further house facades with red-brown roof edge, yellowish grey sky, condition commensurate with age, thinned areas, retouching, craquelure in places, image 43.5x32 cm (HxW), framed, frame chipped, frame width 4.5 cm The winter landscape was introduced into painting by Pieter Bruegel the Elder in the 16th century in the context of pictures of the months and religious scenes; in the early 17th century Hendrick Avercamp detached the motif from its allegorical and religious context and made the winter picture with snow-covered towns, bridges and figures on the ice a genre of its own. Since then the snow-covered town or village view with a bridge has been one of the established themes of landscape painting. The town view in the snow with a bridge is thus winter landscape, winter picture and bridge picture at once. German Description Brücke im Winter, verschneite Brücke mit Geländer vor Gebäude mit spitzem Turmdach, 20. Jh.
