Georg Guenther Munich, two character heads with pipe and cigar, cabinet pictures in ornate frames Two paintings, oil/canvas, each signed 'Georg Guenther' and inscribed 'Muenchen'. 1) Bust portrait of a man in half profile to the right against an olive green ground, with a black broad-brimmed hat, grey beard and ruddy complexion, a cigar in the corner of his mouth, below a dark coat over a light shirt; signed lower right. 2) Bust portrait of a man in profile to the left against a light green ground, with a blue-grey pointed cap, sharply cut, clean-shaven face and a long tobacco pipe in his mouth, together with a red neckerchief; signed lower left. Age-appropriate good condition, fine craquelure, partially slightly rubbed, the man with the pipe with a small repaired hole at centre right. Image 21.5 x 18 cm (HxW) each. Framed in wide, gilt ornate frames with modelled rocaille and leaf decoration, frames bumped, frame width 10 cm each. The character head was a genre in its own right in Munich painting of the late 19th century. Prompted by the school of Wilhelm Leibl and by the success of 17th century Dutch head studies, small-format studies of peasants, fishermen and craftsmen were produced in Munich in large numbers and sold by the art trade as cabinet pictures to middle-class collectors. They were deliberately painted as pendants and hung in pairs; the heavy, plastically worked gilt frames belong to the contemporary presentation of these formats and set off the small picture field like a piece of jewellery.
