"Des Goldschmieds Töchterlein" after Ludwig Uhland, goldsmith's workshop with knight, ornate frame Overpainted lithograph on curved panel, unsigned, scene after the ballad "Des Goldschmieds Töchterlein" by Ludwig Uhland, workshop interior beneath a painted round arch with gold-coloured scrollwork, columns and red curtains at the sides, on the left the seated goldsmith with a grey full beard, green cap and green apron at a reddish-brown workbench with chains and a cross pendant, behind him his daughter with pinned-up hair, white blouse and dark green bodice, on the right the knight with red beret and feathers, blue cloak and rapier, in the background a staircase and a view of houses, condition commensurate with age, paint losses, retouching, scratches, image 9.5x13 cm (HxW), framed, wide gold-coloured frame with ornamental band and bead moulding, frame slightly bumped, frame width 6.5 cm Ludwig Uhland (1787 to 1862) published the ballad in 1815 in his collection "Gedichte". It tells of Helene, the daughter of a goldsmith, who silently loves a knight who orders a small wreath and a diamond ring for his bride from her father; in the end Helene herself turns out to be the chosen one, and the knight places wreath and ring on her. The romantic subject was depicted many times in the 19th century, for example by the Berlin genre and history painter Wilhelm Nerenz (1804 to 1871), who studied at the Düsseldorf Academy and painted the subject as a series of pictures in the 1830s; one painting from it is held by the LVR-LandesMuseum Bonn. Many of his pictures were reproduced as woodcuts and lithographs; after his goldsmith scene the Leipzig steel engraver and publisher Albert Henry Payne made a steel engraving circa 1850. Small picture panels such as this belong to the context of the oleograph, which from 1836 reproduced paintings in colour lithography.
