Front Christmas Tree on a Wooden Cross with Glass Ornaments, Candle Holders and Glass Topper Small Christmas tree on a white-painted wooden cross with green-lined edges, the trunk a wooden rod, the branches of wire with light green trimming. Hung with glass ornaments in silver, red, green, rosé and turquoise, among them balls, cones, acorns, heart, Father Christmas and figural shapes as well as a bird with a yellow glass beak, together with silver tinsel garlands. The topper of glass with a silver ball and a long spike. Three candle holders with clips and yellow candles. Condition commensurate with age. H. 36 cm. Artificial Christmas trees appeared in Germany towards the end of the 19th century, when the felling of trees for Christmas came in for criticism; small table trees of this kind could be reused year after year and also fitted into cramped living quarters. The blown glass ornaments go back to Lauscha in Thuringia, where the first Christmas baubles and glass fruits were made from 1847. Tinsel was invented in Nuremberg as early as 1610 and was intended to imitate icicles. H. 36 cm.
