Plate by the State Porcelain Manufactory Meissen with a pierced rim in basketwork form and a shaped, scalloped and gilt edge. In the well the Indian painting in purple with peonies, chrysanthemums and leafy scrolls, the flower centres heightened in gold; on the rim three moulded rocaille cartouches each with a purple blossom, the basketwork bars decorated with gold lines. The monochrome Indian painting is executed at Meissen in purple and in green; the manufactory describes the motif as peony and chrysanthemum. The term is the historical technical name for stylised East Asian flower patterns, which in the 18th c. were called Indian flowers and were distinguished from the German flowers. The impressed number denotes the form: 54803 stands for the reticulated plate of about 24 cm diameter from the Neuer Ausschnitt form; the manufactory has issued five-figure form numbers since 1973.
