Karlsruhe majolica figure of the Virgin and Child, coloured glazes, craquelure, 20th century Ceramic with coloured glazes. Figure by the Staatliche Majolika Manufaktur Karlsruhe, standing Virgin with the Christ Child on her arm, slender and elongated in stylised form, on a square base with drawn-in sides. The robe cream-white with brown shading, the cloak glazed green, the base dark brown. The glaze with craquelure. On the underside the paper label with red field showing the crowned Baden coat of arms and the inscription Staatliche Majolika Manufaktur Karlsruhe A.-G. in Gothic script, the number 4088 impressed in the base. Age-related condition, firing defects on the rim, glaze defects, base with small chips. H. 22 cm. 360-degree photo on our website. The manufactory was founded in Karlsruhe in 1901 at the suggestion of the painter Hans Thoma as the Grand Ducal Majolica Manufactory. In 1919 it passed to the state of Baden, in 1922 it became a joint-stock company and from 1927 traded as Staatliche Majolika-Manufaktur Karlsruhe AG; the paper label with the A.-G. suffix accordingly dates from after 1927. The fine craquelure arises in the firing from the different expansion of body and glaze; the craquele glaze is one of the manufactory's documented glaze types. Production ended in 2024. German Description Karlsruher Majolika Figur Maria mit dem Christuskind, farbig glasiert, Krakelee, 20. Jh. Keramik, farbig glasiert.
