Schutztruppe shooting target, Kommando des Nordbezirks Windhuk, German South West Africa, 1912 Colour lithograph on card, commemorative shooting target of the Imperial Schutztruppe for German South West Africa, in the centre a forest landscape with two fighting roebucks, behind them further roe deer, above in red and black calligraphy "Geschossen - stehend aufgelegt - am 21. August 1912.", below "Kommando des Nordbezirks Windhuk D. S. W. A.", on the image field several bullet hits, to which the rank and name of the shooters are assigned by hand (Gefr., Sergt., Unteroffz., Feldw.), condition commensurate with age with clear signs of time, water stains, creases and slight edge damage, image 36.5x51.5 cm (HxW), framed behind glass, frame chipped and with woodworm, overall 44.5x59.5 cm (HxW). The Imperial Schutztruppe for German South West Africa, present-day Namibia, was established by imperial law of 9 June 1895; its command was based in Windhuk, and the force was divided into a northern and a southern district command based in Windhuk and Keetmanshoop. It consisted mainly of volunteers from the German Army and Navy and in July 1914 comprised around 2,000 men in twelve mounted companies. Hand-inscribed shooting targets such as this one are unique pieces: the hits were marked and assigned to the individual shooters with rank and name.
