Als Konservator des Louvre und glühender Verfechter Napoleons III. beschrieb der Graf Horace de Viel-Castel in diesen Memoiren das politische Leben und die Gesellschaft des Zweiten Kaiserreichs. Seine sehr authentische Darstellung ist stark geprägt von der Feindseligkeit, die er gegenüber seinen Gegnern an den Tag legte, zu denen unter anderem Prinz Napoleon und Victor Hugo gehörten.
