Rembrandt Harmensz. van Rijn (1606 Leiden - Amsterdam 1669), Nude Man Seated on the Ground with One Leg Extended. Etching and engraving on laid paper, watermark fragment Pot. (1646). 10.5 x 17.2 cm (sheet). Bartsch 196; White/Boon 196 II (of II); Hinterding/Rutgers (The New Hollstein) 234 II (of III). Provenance: William Esdaile (1758–1837), London, with his handwritten collector’s mark verso (Lugt 2617). A fine, rich and dark impression of New Hollstein’s second state (of three), printing with light plate tone, with inky plate edges and the fine vertical wiping scratches, particularly beneath the man and his leg, characteristic of early impressions. With small margins. Rembrandt probably had more apprentices than any other Dutch painter of the 17th century. In his 'Groote Schouburgh', Arnold Houbraken describes an attic on Amsterdam’s Bloemgracht that Rembrandt rented for his pupils to draw and paint from life. Drawings from Rembrandt’s circle in the Albertina, Vienna, suggest that the master himself also participated in these studies of the nude. In 1646, three etchings, including the present seated male nude, were produced after the same model. – In good condition. Taxation: regelbesteuert (VAT: Regular Taxation).
