REITERSTATUE – Mali – Dogon Mitte des 20. Jahrhunderts. Holz. Maße: H. 55 cm. Das langgestreckte Gesicht, die pfeilspitzenförmige Nase, der stilisierte Bart und die kantigen Formen des Pferdekörpers und des Mannes sind typisch für die Kunst der Dogon. Der Reiter hält die Zügel mit der linken Hand, während sein rechter Arm zum Kopf hin angewinkelt ist. In der Kosmogonie der Dogon symbolisiert der Reiter, Hogon, eine spirituelle Autoritätsfigur, einen religiösen Führer oder einen mythischen Vorfahren. Das Pferd hingegen, ein in der Sahelzone seltenes und kostbares Tier, ist ein untrennbares Attribut der Macht. Zustand: Dunkle, matte Gebrauchspatina, stellenweise krustig.
