Gerahmt Das Gemälde zeigt David bei der Tötung des Goliath, ein Motiv, das in der Malerei des 17. Jahrhunderts nach Caravaggios berühmter Darstellung des Themas (Galleria Borghese, Rom) sehr beliebt war. Das vorliegende Werk spiegelt zwar dieses Vorbild wider, verfolgt jedoch eine lyrischere Interpretation, die Anklänge an die Caravaggio-inspirierte Malerei von Claude Vignon und insbesondere an den neapolitanischen Naturalismus von Battistello Caracciolo aufweist, wie Nicola Spinosa dem Eigentümer nahelegt.
