Pasquale Mattej (Formia 1813 – Neapel 1879) Cm. 40,5 x 53,5 Cm.57 x 70 con cornice Öl auf Leinwand Hochzeit von Franz II. mit der Herzogin von Bayern, Maria-Sofia Das vorliegende Werk, geschaffen vom scharfsinnigen Chronisten und Maler Pasquale Mattej, , „fotografiert“ ein für das Königreich Neapel und beider Sizilien bedeutendes historisches Ereignis, nämlich die Hochzeit von Franz II. mit der Herzogin von Bayern, Maria-Sofia, am symbolträchtigsten Ort der neapolitanischen Sakralität, dem Dom von San Gennaro. Offiziell wurde die Hochzeit zunächst in Deutschland und anschließend in Bari gefeiert, doch der König wollte die Zeremonie zwangsläufig auch vor dem neapolitanischen Volk wiederholen: eine Art symbolischer Dank an die Stadt, die immerhin die Hauptstadt des Königreichs war.
