A 19th century patinated & gilt bronze ewer, After a model by Sigisbert-François Michel (1728-1811) Decorative ewer symbolizing Water in patinated and gilded bronze, decorated with a triton holding a dolphin from which water reeds escape, resting on a square base. Originally paired with another symbolizing Wine, surmounted by a satyr retaining the horns of a goat from which vines shoot out. 19th century, after a model circa 1774. H. 37.5 x L. 20 cm. History The sculptor Sigisbert-François Michel (1728-1811), eldest brother of the French sculptor Clodion, exhibited in 1774 two plaster ewer vases of the same design at the Académie Saint-Luc in Paris. Related works - The only known 18th century bronze pair, dated circa 1775, is in the J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles (USA), a partial gift from Dr Horace W. Brock in honor of Will Iselin (inv. 2015.61), ill. 3. - An identical model with its pendant forming a pair: Sotheby's Paris sale, Mobilier, Sculptures Et Objets D'Art, May 14, 2014, lot 254.
