Drouot Estimations | Simon Hantaï – Five Previously Unseen Paintings at Auction

On 14 October, Hôtel Drouot will host an exceptional sale of modern and contemporary art organised by Drouot Estimations. At its heart is a group of five monumental paintings by Simon Hantaï from the former Jean Fournier collection, four of which are appearing at auction for the first time. Executed between 1956 and 1970, the five paintings showcase the diversity of the work of one of the foremost painters of the second half of the 20th century.
The group is particularly notable for three paintings by Simon Hantaï dating from a rare and little-known period in his career: the years following his break with the Surrealist movement, which he had frequented in the 1950s. From 1955 onwards, Hantaï distanced himself from the group and embarked on a series of radical experiments, seeking to push the boundaries of painting and fundamentally redefine his relationship with matter. Still sparsely represented on the art market and never before brought together as a group at auction, this period is one of the highlights of the collection.

R&C presents a sale at Hôtel Drouot devoted to design, bringing together 20th-century furniture, lighting, ceramics and works of art. Spanning Art Deco through French and Italian design of the 1950s to the 1980s, the auction features creations by Gio Ponti, Pierre Paulin, Claude Lalanne, Georges Jouve, Eugène Printz, Charlotte Perriand and Line Vautrin, among others. Several lots stand out for their rarity, provenance or first-time appearance on the market.
Leading the sale is Claude Lalanne’s Pomme bouche, created around 1980 and estimated at €40,000–60,000. This patinated gilt-bronze edition, bearing the Lalanne stamp and numbered 89/250, was produced by Artcurial. With its organic forms and surrealist character, it embodies Claude Lalanne’s distinctive universe. Another highlight is a walnut wall-mounted cabinet designed by Gio Ponti around 1953, estimated at €25,000–30,000.

For its 20th-Century Art sale, Aponem brings together a selection of modern and contemporary works, including major pieces by Lucio Fontana and Chu Teh-Chun, alongside works from the personal collection of Yves Carcelle, former president of Louis Vuitton and a major collector of contemporary art. Also estimated at €80,000–120,000, Point d’orgue (1992) by Chu Teh-Chun reflects the power of the Franco-Chinese artist’s abstract painting.

Ader | At the Home of Simone Jaoul and René Drouin
27 October 2026
Click on the image to access the catalogue
Ader’s sale of the Simone Jaoul and René Drouin collection at Hôtel Drouot traces the story of two individuals brought together by a shared passion for art. In the post-war period, Simone Jaoul began building a collection with her first husband, Bernard Jaoul, assembling works by artists of their time before continuing her acquisitions independently after his death. Her meeting with René Drouin, an influential gallerist based on Place Vendôme, marked a new chapter: drawing on his knowledge of artists and the art market, he advised her in her choices without ever imposing his own perspective.
The collection bears witness to the artistic and intellectual vitality of post-war Paris, through works by artists including Jean Dubuffet, Jean Fautrier, Wols, Max Ernst and Henri Michaux, whom René Drouin exhibited and championed. Built up over the years through encounters and affinities, it reflects both the gallerist’s close ties to the artistic scene and Simone Jaoul’s distinctive tastes.

The École de Paris sale brings together artists from across Central and Eastern Europe who made Montparnasse and Paris laboratories of modernity. Throughout the catalogue, a number of works stand out for their quality, history or rarity, with the first also being the most ambitious: a double-sided painting by Mela Muter, Femmes sur les bords du Rhône à Avignon / Esquisse de portrait d’homme, executed around 1940 (€60,000–80,000).
Of comparable quality but more intimate in scale, Nu de dos, 1953 by Moïse Kisling (€30,000–40,000) depicts a young woman seen from behind, her red hair set against a halo of green and ochre. Henri Hayden portrayed himself in 1915 in Autoportrait du peintre (lot 48, €30,000–40,000). Shown in bust, slightly turned three-quarters, he stands before a green curtain. His face is constructed through broad planes of light and shadow, while his almost entirely black eyes give the gaze a striking intensity. Finally, the power of the human body lies at the heart of Lutteurs by Károly Ferenczy (lot 212, €30,000–40,000), painted in 1912. Two naked men grapple in a close struggle against a deep blue background.

Coutau-Bégarie presents its Provenances & Collections sale, bringing together a wide range of objects, including hunting arms and hunting daggers, European and export porcelain, Old Master drawings and paintings, textiles, rugs, furniture and works of art, alongside a section devoted to design and modern paintings.
Among the most substantial groups is an important selection of armorial porcelain from the China Trade, from a European collection. The sale also features several pieces from aristocratic collections, including a set of three tapestries inspired by the Iliad, from a private mansion in Provence and characteristic of the production of the Oudenaarde weaving workshops (€12,000–15,000). Also noteworthy is a Chinese lacquer and Parisian varnish commode from the former Rothschild collection (€20,000–30,000), as well as a striking biblical subject depicting Noah’s Ark by Cornelis Saftleven (1607–1681), estimated at €20,000–30,000.
A strong group of modern and contemporary works brings the sale to a close, led perhaps by the most eagerly anticipated work of the auction: Malstroem, 1974, by Anna-Eva Bergman (€50,000–60,000). This large painting, acquired directly by the parents of the current owners, is appearing at auction for the first time.
