The pinnacle of Burgundy: Henri Jayer and Armand Rousseau
Henri Jayer (1922–2006), a leading figure in Vosne-Romanée
Born in 1922 in Vosne-Romanée into a family of winegrowers, Henri Jayer’s story is closely intertwined with Cros-Parantoux, a steep and stony plot in Vosne-Romanée that he began bringing back into cultivation in the 1950s. Through clearing the land, preparing the soils and planting vines, Henri Jayer gradually revealed the full potential of this exceptional terroir.
In 1978, he released Cros-Parantoux under his own name and as a distinct cuvée for the first time, helping to establish the parcel as one of the most emblematic names in Vosne-Romanée.
Henri Jayer’s approach was rooted in an intimate understanding of terroir, meticulous vineyard work and a constant pursuit of precision. His name remains closely associated with the history of Burgundy’s great wines, and in particular with Vosne-Romanée and Cros-Parantoux.
Armand Rousseau (1884–1959), one of the great names of Gevrey-Chambertin
