"Modes de Présence" : Hôtel Drouot's first exhibition dedicated to young contemporary Asian artists

F rom 3 to 6 June, Hôtel Drouot will host, for the first time, an exhibition dedicated to the emerging Asian contemporary scene: "Modes de Présence", presented by Art Plus Trois. The exhibition will bring together works by Ruimin Ma, Manman Zheng, Zihua Fan, Chuhan Xiao and Ivy Zishan Tang, on view in Room 11.

Presence is never a completed state

It is neither a stable position nor a definitively constituted identity. Presence emerges through shifting relationships — between proximity and distance, appearance and withdrawal — while being continually shaped by the worlds to which it responds. To exist therefore belongs less to a fixed condition than to an ongoing process of becoming: a negotiation, an adjustment, a form constantly in transformation.

"Modes de Présence" does not seek to define what presence is, but rather to question the conditions through which it manifests itself. How does it become perceptible through the body, materiality, scale, time, space, or forms of sensibility? How is it transformed through contact with multiple realities and ever-changing contexts?

Here, presence is never singular

It appears through a plurality of forms: persisting, passing through, resisting, hesitating, disappearing, or revealing itself through the faintest traces. Presence never appears as a unified posture, but rather as a provisional assemblage of states, positions, and complex relationships.

Bringing together a range of practices from the Asian contemporary scene, the exhibition does not aim to construct a homogeneous narrative grounded in geographical, cultural, or identity-based belonging. Instead, “Asia” is approached here as a space of experiences in motion — shaped by overlaps, displacements, and constant recompositions — less as a stable definition than as a condition in perpetual becoming.

The works presented do not provide answers

Rather, they open spaces of perception in which certain forms of existence — still unstable or unnamed — become momentarily perceptible. Presence is not about occupying space, but about continuing to become through encounters with others, environments, and time.

Artists

La vie mobile 2024–2026
© Ruimin Ma
Acrylic on market paper
Approx. 10 × 8 cm, variable dimensions

“The mobile phone is the tool I use most in my daily life. Through its screen, it represents another space connected to the real world. This work forms part of a broader series. I aim to highlight the fragmentation of information conveyed through mobile phones, both through their quantity and their varying forms.”
— Ruimin Ma

Manman Zheng
Ce qui reste
Cotton, wood, iron
21 × 161 cm, 7 pieces, variable dimensions
2025

"Ce qui Reste (What Remains) explores the way presence persists through its traces. Between appearance and erasure, the work questions what remains perceptible once the body and time have already passed through matter."
— Manman Zheng

Zihua Fan
Flicker
925 silver, freshwater pearls
43 × 57 mm, 23 × 46 mm

“Through the light bulb, I explore the brevity of existence. Inspired by Zhuangzi, this work is less concerned with disappearance than with the traces left behind by each flash of light, as fragile forms of presence.”
— Zihua Fan

Echoes in the Blur
Weaving the Unheld — Fine silver, quartz vase, 80 × 80 × 90 mm, 2025

“Through Echoes in the Blur, I explore the way presence persists through fragile traces. Between appearance, transformation, and erasure, memory and emotions take on a material form. The body becomes a site of inscription where incomplete experiences continue to exist.”
— Chuhan Xiao

Ivy Zishan Tang
A Soft Whisper in My Heart
Mixed media on canvas, each
24 × 30 cm, 4 pieces
2024–2025

"Through mixed-media compositions inspired by traditional Chinese painting, the work explores how presence persists through memory, landscape, and lived experience. Between organic forms, diffused textures, and layered gestures, the landscapes become sensitive spaces where memories, heritage, and perception continue to exist"
— Ivy Zishan Tang
