An exemplary restitution crowned by a strong result
Giquello offered today a major painting by Pierre-Auguste Renoir from the former collection of Alfred Weinberger, the expert and art dealer whose works were seized during the Second World War. Confiscated in 1941 by the Einsatzstab Reichsleiter Rosenberg (ERR) and then transferred to Germany, Laveuse was listed after the war in the Directory of Looted Property in France.
Pierre-Auguste Renoir
Laveuse, circa 1916
Oil on canvas, bearing the signature stamp lower right
Hammer price: €303,312
Rediscovered during an estate inventory and first offered for sale in 2023, the painting had been acquired in good faith by a collector in the 1980s from Galerie Segoura and came with all the usual documentation. Yet it was the buyer who, upon consulting the archives, uncovered evidence of its wartime looting.
Giquello subsequently cancelled the sale and initiated the procedure that led to its restitution to the Weinberger heirs, who chose once again to entrust the painting to the auction house for its sale at Drouot.
