The first, a medieval fortress acquired in 1963 by Léopold Gigot, will highlight exquisite canvases that pay tribute to 16th- and 17th-century artists. A painting depicting Judith and Holofernes, created by the circle of Ghirlandaio, will crown this selection, with an estimate of €10,000–15,000. Jan Boeckhorst will also be featured with Janus and the Four Seasons, reflecting the taste for allegory in the grand Flemish Baroque decorations (est. €15,000–20,000).
Austrian or German School, 19th century, after Lorenzo Mattielli (1687–1748)
The Rape of Proserpina
Carved ivory group
Est. €20,000 – 30,000
The second residence, owned by a film producer, will also present Old Master paintings, including a work by Giuseppe Bartolomeo Chiari. The Virgin Appears to Saint Luke Painting the Pietà, commissioned by Rocco Banola for the altar of the Saint Luke chapel in the Oratory Church of Saint-Étienne at Corconio, is estimated at €20,000–30,000.
A magnificent ivory group, Venus Pudica and Antinous of the Belvedere, offers a precious example of 18th-century Italian workshops (est. €15,000–20,000). A second piece, depicting the Rape of Proserpina, is probably part of a series of six ivories executed after a model by Lorenzo Mattielli (est. €20,000–30,000). As for furniture, a large late-16th-century credenza (est. €6,000–8,000) will be followed by a rare William and Mary cabinet attributed to Gerrit Jensen (est. €15,000–20,000).
