120 works by Toshio Bando from a private collection

O n April 4, Ader Auctions will present an exceptional collection of 120 works by Japanese artist Toshio Bando. The collection was started in 1986 by Jacques Boutersky with the purchase of Nature morte aux aulx for 7,000 francs—an acquisition that sparked a lifelong passion. A gallery owner on the Promenade des Anglais in Nice, Boutersky soon sought out the artist’s widow, Toji, and embarked on a decades-long pursuit of Bando’s works, sourcing them from galleries, auctions, and private collectors. Nearly 40 years later, he and his family are now bringing this remarkable collection to auction. The star lot of the sale, Autoportrait aux pinceaux, is estimated at €20,000–30,000. In this striking self-portrait, the artist appears calm and composed, delicately holding a paint brush.

In Paris, he quickly formed a close friendship with Léonard Foujita, who had already been living there for a decade. Through him, Bando was introduced to key figures of the artistic scene, including Kiki de Montparnasse and Man Ray. Before long, he was exhibiting at the Salon d’Automne, the Salon des Tuileries, and the Salon des Indépendants. His work caught the eye of Georges Chéron—the renowned dealer who represented Soutine and Modigliani—who invited him to take part in the exhibition Foujita et la jeune peinture japonaise at his gallery on 56 rue de la Boétie. With its refined intimacy, delicate lines, and subtle palette, Bando’s art quickly won over the critics.

In November 1924, Bando left Paris and settled at 19 rue Lafontaine in Pierrefitte-sur-Seine. His new home allowed him to surround himself with animals—several dogs and cats, birds, and even a small monkey. This lively menagerie became a constant source of inspiration, reflected in the many animal-themed paintings featured in the sale.
