PHILOLAOS TLOUPAS (born in 1923)

(65 cm) wide PHILOLAOS TLOUPAS Philolaos Tloupas, born in 1923, is a Greek sculptor established in France since 1950. Around the 1960's, after using lead and brass, he finally adopted steel. He made a series of sculptural and monumental works shown today in important institutions and museums. He obtained the shapes by working on flat surfaces, by stretching and folding the metal and he conceived his sculptures by using folded, stretched, hammered sheet metal soldered by large spots every five centimeters. This style of soldering is characteristic of Philolaos work. He plays with contrasts, to catch the light he juxtaposes matt, scratched, shiny polished and grinded surfaces. The sculpture we are presenting is a characteristic example of sheet metal work showing the intention of the sculptor to extend his work towards sculptured objects or furniture.
