Description

Tantric crown for shamanic rituals belonging to a Rinpoche of the Karma Kagyu lineage. Tibet, 17th century. The crown is made of plates and beads, all carved from bone. Some beads are missing. All bone parts, sewn on a fabric cap, possibly cotton. With general erosions and dust and dirt stains. Measurements: 17 x 23 cm (diameter). The origins of the Kagyu school can be traced back to the teachings of the Indian mystics Tilopa (988-1089) and Naropa (1016-1100), whose lineage was passed down in Tibet by the great translator Marpa (1012-1097). Marpa's main disciple was Milarepa (1052-1135). Among Milarepa's many students was Gampopa (1079-1153), who was recognised as the true founder of kagyu as a new school of Tibetan Buddhism. Following Gampopa's teachings, it evolved into the four major schools, and from Gampopa's disciple Phagmogrupa, the eight minor lineages of the kagyu school.
