Né à Moscou en 1935, Oleg Tselkov figure parmi les peintres non-conformistes russes les plus connes des années 1960 (Eric Bulatov, Oscar Rabin, Oleg Koulik et d’autres). Il a commencé à exposer ses œuvres en Europe dans les années 1970. En 1977, sous la pression de la pouvoir soviétique, Tselkov a dû quitter définitivement l’URSS pour s’installer en France. Il n’a jamais vu son départ d’URSS comme une drame, mais plutôt comme une opportunité de s’ouvrir vers l’art international. Son style formé sous l’influence des avant-gardistes (K.Malevitch, V.Kandinsky, P.Kontchalovski) devient assez clair déjà dans les années 1970. Sans vouloir faire de son art un moyen de combat contre l’URSS, il se tourne rapidement vers des artistes internationaux comme Francis Bacon ou Alberto Giacometti qui l’ont beaucoup influencé. Au centre de l’art d’Oleg Tselkov se trouve un personnage récurrent, représenté sous forme de masque blanc. Il travaillera ce personnage avec ses visages-masques toute sa vie. Les couleurs folkloriques et traditionnelles, mais frappantes - « Les couleurs doivent tuer, taper fort entre les yeux », disait Tselkov - ont rendu ses tableaux facilement reconnaissables. He began exhibiting his work in Europe in the 1970s. In 1977, under pressure from the Soviet authorities, Tselkov had to leave the USSR for good and settle in France. He never saw his departure from the USSR as a tragedy, but rather as an opportunity to open up to international art. His style, formed under the influence of the avant-gardists (K.Malevitch, V.Kandinsky, P.Kontchalovski), became quite clear already in the 1970s. Without wanting to use his art as a means of fighting against the USSR, he quickly turned to international artists such as Francis Bacon and Alberto Giacometti, who influenced him greatly.
