W. studiò storia dell’arte e lavorò nell’industria tessile, ma fu anche attivo artisticamente. Dal 1969 al 1992 fu professore alla HfBK di Amburgo. Le sue opere si basano su effetti e illusioni ottiche che nascono dall’intreccio delle linee. Insieme alla moglie ha fondato la Fondazione per l’arte concreta e il design a Ingolstadt.
