Resurrection of Christ and Descent into Hell - 19th century Egg tempera on panel Height x width: 47.5 x 35 cm It is enriched by a detailed narrative of ancillary Easter scenes—a theological arrangement typical of the 19th century and widespread in the schools of Central Russia. The work's title is clearly stated in the Church Slavonic inscription lettered in dark characters along the upper frame: "Образъ Воскресенiя Христова" (Obraz Voskresenija Khristova), meaning "Image of the Resurrection of Christ." Iconographically, the panel unites the two pivotal moments of Orthodox Easter within a single pictorial space, unfolding the narrative from bottom to top along a diagonal trajectory. The lower section depicts the Descent into Hell: Jesus Christ, enveloped in a radiant red mandorla of light, tramples the shattered gates of Hades and grasps the forefather Adam by the hand to lead him out of the darkness, followed by Eve and the ranks of biblical kings and prophets (including David and Solomon). On the opposite side, Christ appears again on the shore of the Sea of Galilee, calling the Apostle Peter—shown in the act of walking on water—towards Himself. At the center of the panel, the composition culminates in the Resurrection and Ascension: the risen Savior rises triumphantly above the empty tomb within an ellipse of golden light. From this central focal point, a procession of blessed souls winds its way up the rocky slopes—led by the Good Thief Dismas (depicted carrying his cross)—towards the gates of Paradise visible at the upper right, guarded by a seraph. In the upper left corner, the scene of the Myrrh-bearing women arriving at the empty tomb and receiving the angel's announcement is also depicted. Stylistically, the panel is distinguished by a rich narrative complexity that harmoniously blends multiple episodes within a fragmented, stylized rocky landscape—a hallmark of the Byzantine-Russian tradition. The color palette favors warm contrasts between earthy tones, the luminous gold of the haloes, and the vivid chromatic contrast of the divine mandorlas, imbuing the entire salvific vision with powerful dramatic and expressive intensity.
