Allievo di Jules Cavelier all’École des Beaux-Arts di Parigi, Charpentier espone regolarmente al Salon e realizza importanti commissioni pubbliche. A lui si deve il bellissimo gruppo scultoreo *L’Art contemporain* sulla facciata del Grand Palais; i musei d’Orsay, del Lussemburgo e di Avignone conservano alcune delle sue opere.
