Ufficiale di carriera nella cavalleria, frequenta corsi di scultura negli atelier di Barye e Mêne. Una caduta da cavallo pone fine alla sua carriera militare. Da quel momento in poi si dedica interamente alla scultura e, a partire dal 1865, espone numerose opere al Salon.
