Lucan Bridge and the Mausoleum of the Plautii along the Aniene River, near Tivoli, Rome, second half of the 19th century Small spun enamel mosaic, 29 x 45.5 cm - framed, 36 x 52 cm Within a molded gilded wooden frame. The Roman arched bridge dates back to the early 1st century AD (Augustan period) and was a popular subject of painting during the Grand Tour. The nearby circular mausoleum was transformed into a fortified watchtower in the Middle Ages to monitor the surrounding areas.
