Naïla de Monbrison – A Passionate Gallerist

M aurice Auction will present on 8 and 9 April the personal collection of Naïla de Monbrison, a committed gallerist and collector with an eclectic and refined taste.
This collection will be offered in two separate sales: the first will bring together all the furniture and artworks from her Paris apartment on rue de Grenelle (190 lots); the second will present her personal jewellery as well as pieces from her gallery (230 lots). A true cabinet of curiosities, Naïla de Monbrison’s apartment houses a dense and coherent ensemble of African and Oceanic art, archaeological objects, photographs, as well as contemporary art and design creations.

Some works from the collection of her husband, Marc de Monbrison, further extend this subtle dialogue between cultures, eras, and sensibilities. In Oceanic art, highlights include a Lei Niho Palaoa necklace from the Hawaiian Islands and an important tapa from Humboldt Bay in Papua New Guinea; African art is represented by a precious selection of Baoulé gold jewellery. In design, there are lamps by Alberto and Diego Giacometti and furniture by Garouste and Bonetti. The photography section brings together works by Frank Horvat, Robert Doisneau, Piet Zwart, James Welling, and Stéphane Couturier. Each object reflects a strong taste, a curiosity without hierarchy, and a pioneering spirit: an interior conceived as a composition, where eclecticism becomes a signature and every object participates in a deeply personal and innovative vision.

Her jewellery collection embodies a vision she has defended for nearly forty years: to consider jewellery as a work of art in its own right, a sculptural form designed for the body. Each piece transcends mere adornment to become an autonomous creation, carrying a gesture, research, and artistic language.

Founded in 1987 on rue de Bourgogne, her gallery quickly became a reference point for collectors, enthusiasts, and museum institutions. Among the first in France to exclusively champion contemporary and artist jewellery, she worked with her creators as an art gallery would: providing long-term support, thematic exhibitions, and contextual presentation of the works.

Among the artists she represented were Tina Chow, Giampaolo Babetto, Gilles Jonemann, Martial Berro, Giorgio Vigna, Florence Lehmann, Taher Chemirik, Alberto Guzman, and Claude Boisselier. These names reflect the coherence of her commitment and her vision of jewellery, which she defended with determination.
