Leaving behind the rustic charms of Crozant, this time Armand Guillaumin set down his easel on the banks of the Seine to capture this river landscape, where light pink clouds are reflected on the water's surface. The light at the end of the day is fragmented into broad, juxtaposed brushstrokes, emblematic of the Post-Impressionist technique, and foreshadowing the imminent advent of Fauvism... This canvas was painted around 1900 in Samois, a village six kilometers from Fontainebleau and a favorite source of inspiration for Parisian artists breaking away from conventional art. Berthe Morisot, Odilon Redon, Paul Signac, Albert Marquet and Maurice Utrillo all worked there in succession, forming a small but ever-changing community.

As for Armand Guillaumin, he visited the area on numerous occasions from the late 1890s onwards, producing several landscapes with the same title, La Seine à Samois, and the same framing, showing the houses of Bas-Samois in the distance. Among these paintings is one at the MuMa in Le Havre, animated by two figures (1898), while a second (circa 1902, former Durand-Ruel collection) appears in the catalog raisonné compiled by Georges Serret and Dominique Fabiani under no. 551.
