A Private Collection of Modern Art – From Boudin to Ruhlmann
O n 23 June, Art Richelieu will present a sale bringing together some of the greatest names in modern art, led by Eugène Boudin, Edgar Degas, Albert Marquet, and Eugène Printz.
Among the highlights of this private collection is an oil on canvas by Eugène Boudin, estimated at €20,000–30,000. A frequent visitor to the quays and harbours of western France—particularly known for his seascapes of Trouville—Boudin used this subject as a pretext for subtle plays of water reflections and masterful renderings of cloudy skies.
The artist’s fluid brushwork and ability to capture the shimmering effects of light underscore the pivotal role played by the Honfleur-born painter in the origins of Impressionism. A charcoal drawing enhanced with pastel by Edgar Degas (estimated at €80,000–120,000) also stands out in the sale. Through drawing, Degas captured the perfection of a gesture or a pose. Beyond the allure of his subjects, his works often resemble snapshots—instantaneous and vivid, much like early photographs.

A tireless traveller between Paris, Marseille, Normandy and Venice, Albert Marquet had a distinct fondness for waterfront views. Seaside Landscape reflects this passion, with water and shoreline becoming recurring themes in his work. Despite their apparent simplicity, his compositions are highly structured. Most of his paintings offer slightly elevated vantage points, looking down onto the scene with quiet restraint (estimate: €100,000–150,000).
Design also claims its place in this sale, with eight pieces of furniture by Eugène Printz, including a pair of side cabinets (estimate: €60,000–90,000) and a tall chest of drawers (estimate: €60,000–80,000). Finally, an elegant “Ducharne” cabinet—first designed in 1926 and estimated at €40,000–80,000—embodies the timeless refinement of Jacques-Émile Ruhlmann’s creations.
