1104 - Jewellery casket. [Low Countries] 1634 16,5 x 9,5 x 10,5 cm, wood covered with black leather richly blind-tooled "à la grotesque" with repeated small tools and geometric compartments, the domed lid with a central rosette, brass fittings comprising a curved carrying handle, two hinges and two clasps, the underside similarly decorated and tooled with the date "1634", on four turned white feet, interior lined with red paper, the exposed edges of the main compartment painted red, with a purple velvet-lined ring compartment (minor rubbing to the leather, the upper terminal of one hinge missing, traces of use to the interior with a small crack to the paper lining on one side). Nice condition. The dense blind-tooled decoration is closely related to contemporary bookbinding techniques. The form and decoration are consistent with leather-covered caskets produced in the Low Countries during the first half of the 17th century. The precise place of manufacture remains uncertain.
