1047 - TOULOUSE, Jean de (workshop of) Leaf CIIII from the Pontifical of Juan Guzman de Villacreces or the Colombina Pontifical. [Avignon 1390] 37 x 27,5 cm, parchment, Gothic hand, mainly in red pen on 2 columns of 24 lines, recto-verso. From the workshop of the famous miniaturist Jean de Toulouse, active in Avignon during the Schism of the Catholic Church (1378-1417). 1 leaf (2 pages) from the luxurious pontifical of Juan de Villacreces, bishop of Calahorra and La Calzada (1382-1394) and of Burgos (1394-1403), and chancellor of Queen Leonor of Navarre. The original codex, commissioned by the bishop himself in 1390, had 328 ff. but was partly disassembled during the 1880's. The main part of the manuscript is kept now at the Biblioteca Capitular Colombina at Seville Cathedral, which was greatly enriched by donations from Hernando Colòn, son of Christopher Columbus. Two cuttings of the manuscript are kept in the Musée de Picardie at Amiens. Our fragment particularly deals with the ceremony for the ordination of a bishop. Ref. A.M.
