817 - FERDINAND II, Holy Roman Emperor Letters patent confirming the nobility and granting an augmentation of arms to Servays (or Servaz) de Bulciau, Imperial captain in the Verdugo Regiment. Vienna 17 April 1621 C. 68 x 78 cm, vellum, brown and gold inks, Latin, coat of arms in black ink and gouache in a black and gold frame, signed "Ferdinandus" at lower left, countersigned by the secretary below (a few sm. stains, browning to the upper margin and along the horizontal folds, seal missing). Framed under glass (n.s.o.f.). A fine imperial patent confirming the knightly nobility of Servays de Bulciau, an officer in the Habsburg armies. His regiment, commanded by the imperial colonel Guglielmo Verdugo, was active in Moravia and Hungary during the opening campaigns of the Thirty Years’ War. The patent notably records de Bulciau’s distinguished service at the Battle of White Mountain near Prague (8 November 1620), the decisive imperial victory over the Bohemian revolt. Unusually, de Bulciau was granted the privilege of adding the imperial eagle to his coat of arms, for himself and all his descendants, male and female. The augmented arms are finely painted within an ornamental frame (11 x 10 cm).
