Before becoming the face of Danish diplomacy in Tokyo, Lars Tillitse spent much of his career in China. He first served as Denmark’s Consul General in Shanghai (1930), representing Danish commercial interests there. He witnessed the rise in tensions between China and Japan, particularly during the Shanghai incident of 1932. In 1939, he served as Denmark’s official representative to the Chinese Nationalist government (Chiang Kai-shek’s Kuomintang). Thanks to his experience in China, he served as Danish minister to Japan during World War II.
