Au centre, un lievre tenant un parapluie declare a propos d’un soldat « Il court plus vite que moi ». Sur les branches figure, en haut, un panneau indiquant la direction de Montpellier et, sur les cotes et en bas, l’inscription « Croix du Lievre 1940 ». Au revers, un soldat caricatural en fuite et l’inscription « Decernee aux froussards 10-28 mai ». Beliere boule, anneau et ruban d’origine. Piece peu courante, avec patine. Hare Cross of 1940, a fanciful satirical military decoration awarded to soldiers who fled the fighting in 1940. Silver-plated metal. At the centre, a hare holding an umbrella says of a soldier, “He runs faster than I do”. The arms feature a sign pointing towards Montpellier at the top and the inscription “Croix du Lievre 1940” on the sides and bottom. The reverse depicts a caricatured fleeing soldier and bears the inscription “Awarded to cowards, 10–28 May”. Ball suspension, ring and original ribbon. Uncommon piece with patina.
