Charmes-Chambertin has been recognised as an appellation since 1937. The toponym 'Charmes', close to 'chaumes', probably refers to lean, stony and dry soils. The Charmes-Chambertin of Hubert Lignier comes from a tiny parcel of 0.10 hectare, planted in 1948. Located in the southern part of the climat, this parcel enjoys an east-south-east exposure, at 260-275 metres of altitude, on deep soils predominantly clay-limestone and sandy. 2010 is often considered an exceptional vintage in the Côte de Nuits. The very harsh winter is followed by a warm spring. The summer, wet and cool, gives way to a miraculous September, warm and dry, that turns 2010 into a great vintage: small berries with thick skins, fine concentration and high natural acidity. In the glass, pure fruit, fine structure and velvety tannins are expressed. After a wet start to the year, the 2011 vintage enjoys a mild spring, marked by an early and even flowering in May. June, exceptionally hot and sunny, is offset by a more moderate summer, alternating between heat, storms and rain. The vintage will give fresh, pure and fine wines. 2012 begins with a cold, wet spring and a few episodes of frost. The start of summer, between rain and hail, gives way to a sunny, dry and very hot August. September and its ideal weather guarantee ripening in very good conditions: the grapes are highly concentrated, with optimal phenolic ripeness, fine acidity and soft tannins. The 2012 wines, in the Côte de Nuits, are deep, very ripe and balanced. 2015 is a sun-drenched vintage. After a mild and wet winter, the warm and bright spring encourages a rapid and early flowering. Heat and drought set in from June, tempered by the water reserves and the summer rains, which restart the ripening through to September. 2015 is the image of a balanced vintage that brings together fruit, substance, ripe tannins and fine acidity. Its ageing potential is remarkable. The 2016 vintage, after a wet and exceptionally mild winter, has a cold and rainy spring and is marked by a major episode of frost at the end of April. The heat and sun of June-July allow the vines to catch up and reach optimal ripeness through to the harvest, which begins on 28 September at the estate. The 2016 Pinot Noirs are precise and fresh, with silky tannins. In 2017, the season begins with a very cold winter followed by a warm, dry spring. In April, bouts of frost relatively spare the Côte de Nuits. From June to August, warm spells alternate with more temperate ones; sporadic rains encourage gradual, even ripening. The harvest begins on 7 September at the estate. This winemaker's vintage offers mouth-watering, fragrant and supple wines.
