Charmes-Chambertin has been recognised as an appellation since 1937. The toponym 'Charmes', close to 'chaumes', probably refers to lean, stony and dry soils. The Charmes-Chambertin of Hubert Lignier comes from a tiny parcel of 0.10 hectare, planted in 1948. Located in the southern part of the climat, this parcel enjoys an east-south-east exposure, at 260-275 metres of altitude, on deep soils predominantly clay-limestone and sandy. 2007 is a vintage saved by the sun. Although the winter is mild and April the warmest in 50 years, the early flowering is quickly halted by cool, rainy and not very sunny weather from May to August. Disease pressure is eclipsed from late August and throughout September by the sun, dry conditions and a north wind that keep the vineyard healthy. The 2007 wines are charming, fragrant and supple. The start of 2008 is difficult: a rather cool winter gives way to a cold and wet spring that affects the flowering. After a fine month of May, rainy and uncertain weather sets in until August. The ripening is saved by a warm and sunny September, as well as by north winds that keep the harvest healthy. With their fine acidity, the 2008 wines are taut, energetic and precise, supported by a fine, polished tannic framework. The year 2009 begins with a warm spring and an early flowering. July gives way to hot, dry and very sunny weather from mid-August. A few well-timed showers at the end of the month speed up the ripening, which finishes during the first half of September. At the end of the harvest, the berries will yield ripe, fleshy, fruity and supple wines.
