[Gay literature. Art] Theodore Watts-Dunton. Aylwin Uit het Engelsch door L. van Hamburg. Rott., Bolle, 1899. 1st and only ed. Ex bibliotheca Leesgezelschap "Tot Nut en Uitspanning", Koog a/d Zaan, w. overview of readers. Worn and loose in quires. Transl. of the 1898 roman-à-clef about painter Dante-Gabriel Rossetti (D'Arcy in the novel) and his Pre-Raphaelite and literary circles. This most interesting novel has been totally forgotten and this transl. is virtually unknown. In the annals of gay literary history Watts-Dunton is mainly known as Algernon Swinburne's caregiver and the person who allegedly gave the famous decadent and sadomasochistic poet a periodic whipping (Rowse, Homosexuals in history. 1977, p. 232. See also Mario Praz' Il patto col serpente (1972) for the relation Swinburne - Watts-Dunton). Very rare. No copies in any Dutch library.
