1599 - Night Scene, Signed Lucas, Spanish School, 19th Century

Night Scene, Signed Lucas, Spanish School, 19th Century Oil on canvas. 22 cm. The work presents two figures shrouded in shadow, one female and the other hooded, walking in a somber setting dominated by blue and gray tones. The loose brushwork and the reddish highlights that accentuate the faces evoke a climate of mystery and tension. Lucas employs a gestural and expressive technique typical of late Romanticism, in which the pictorial material becomes a vehicle for emotion and drama. The influence of Goyaesque Expressionism is evident in the deformation of the faces and the symbolic use of chiaroscuro. This small work, of great psychological intensity, reflects the 19th-century fascination with the occult and the irrational, fitting into the spiritual and fantastical movement that characterized the more introspective Spanish painting of the period.
