1592 - Virgin and Child, Spanish School, 17th Century

Virgin and Child, Spanish School, 17th Century Oil on canvas. Dimensions: 55 x 40 cm (unframed), 61 x 47 cm (framed). The composition depicts the Virgin Mary holding the Child Jesus in an intimate gesture of tenderness and contemplation. The Marian figure, wrapped in a red cloak with gold edges and a dark veil, stands out against a sky-blue background studded with stars, a symbol of her purity and immaculate conception. The Child, naked and rosy-fleshed, sweetly clings to his mother's breast, while looking out at the viewer. The soft, diffused light models the faces with a spiritual meaning reminiscent of Spanish-American paintings of domestic devotion. The technique reveals an anonymous hand trained in the 17th-century Spanish Baroque tradition, where religious painting combines iconographic solemnity with human and affectionate sentiment. The work, simple in execution but with remarkable devotional force, is framed within the colonial aesthetic, characterized by expressive ingenuity and chromatic warmth.
