Pair of Baroque pedestals. Hispanic School. 17th century. Carved, polychrome, and gilded wood. With an imposing sculptural presence, this pair of Baroque pedestals takes the form of a truncated cone column and features exuberant relief decoration. The surface is richly carved with plant motifs, highlighting large vine leaves and bunches of grapes intertwined with undulating tendrils, a clear symbolic allusion to wine and fertility, common in the religious ornamental repertoire of the period. The deep and dynamic carving generates a chiaroscuro effect that enhances the three-dimensionality of the motifs.
