1322 - Large Bronze Grand Tour Mask of Mercurius, 20th century

Large Bronze Grand Tour Mask of Mercurius, 20th century Patinated bronze. Measures 49 x 45 x 17 cm. This ornamental sculpture of mythological inspiration depicts the face of Mercury with side wings and exuberant, flowing hair rendered in intricate scrolls. The facial modeling combines idealized features with a hieratic expression, reinforcing the symbolic dimension of the classical god associated with commerce, eloquence, and speed. The surfaces exhibit a greenish patina and metallic nuances that enrich the sculptural effect and enhance the depth of the forms. The composition is notable for its ornamental symmetry and the integration of fantastical elements derived from the classical and modernist repertoires. The piece reflects the 20th-century decorative taste for reinterpreting mythological iconography in an ornamental sculptural style, fusing classical tradition with contemporary decorative sensibilities. Its powerful visual presence and the richness of the modeling make the work a prominent example of decorative arts.
