1068 - Female Portrait. Basque School. 19th Century

Female Portrait. Basque School. 19th Century Oil on canvas. Dimensions: 54 x 43 cm. A half-bust female portrait depicting a woman with a restrained expression and serene expression, dressed in a dark blue dress adorned with elaborate cream-toned embroidery that frames her neck and shoulders. Her hair is tied back in a sober bun, and she wears a pearl earring, accentuating the understated elegance of the ensemble. The background, rendered in a range of blurred reds, ochres, and greens, contributes to highlighting the figure through warm contrasts and glazes. The technique demonstrates careful workmanship, with a soft modeling of the face and special attention to the tonal transition in the flesh tones. The melancholic gaze and the restrained treatment of the attire place this work in the tradition of 19th-century Spanish bourgeois portraiture, where the representation of psychological character is combined with the description of social status. The piece stands out for its compositional balance and the sensitive approach to the sitter's individuality.
