1040 - Circle of Murillo / Spanish School of the 18th Century – Motherhood

Circle of Murillo / Spanish School of the 18th Century – Motherhood Oil on canvas. Dimensions: 77 cm x 52 cm. The scene is set in a humble domestic interior where a mother drinks from a cup while holding a child, while another infant looks on with a cheerful expression, holding bread. The intimate and realistic treatment of the figures conveys a scene of everyday life with strong emotional content. The natural expressions and gestures, along with the restrained use of light and the pyramidal composition, reflect influences of early genre painting. The finish is warm, with a use of browns and ochres that reinforce the domestic atmosphere. This work reflects the sensibility of 18th-century genre painting in the Iberian Peninsula, where family and popular values are exalted through simple yet expressive scenes. The title, "They are in obedience, " reinforces its moralizing message. Due to its age and history of use, this lot may show signs of wear and previous interventions.
