Moses and the Miracle of the Rock. Attributed to Giovanni Lorenzo Bartoletto. Italian School. 17th Century Oil on canvas. Dimensions: 79.5 x 132.5 cm (88 x 142 x 4 cm with frame). This large-format work depicts the biblical episode in which Moses brings forth water from the rock in the presence of the people of Israel. In the foreground, a majestic female figure holds the child, surrounded by figures and angels, while the miraculous scene unfolds in the background. The balanced and monumental composition is notable for its mastery of warm color and loose brushstrokes that model volumes with luminous plasticity. The style, reminiscent of the Bolognese Baroque, reveals influences of Guercino and Carlo Cignani, characterized by theatricality and a spiritual sense of light. From a private collection in Madrid, this work represents a synthesis of spirituality, drama, and pictorial refinement characteristic of the 17th-century Italian school.
