High dignitary standing, Tang Dynasty, China, 7th - 9th century Terracotta with traces of slip and polychromy. This sculpture depicts a high-ranking dignitary standing on a mound, dressed in a long tunic over trousers that fall over his shoes, and wearing a forked hat. The solemn pose and vertical composition emphasize the figure's high rank, while the simplified volumes and stylized folds are fully in keeping with the aesthetics of Tang funerary sculpture. The remaining polychromy and slip lend the piece a distinct historical presence and testify to its original rich decoration.
